Definition
Let be a real weakly stationary process with mean and autocovariance , with . Let be the space of square-integrable random variables. For and , let be the orthogonal projection in of onto the span of . So is the best linear predictor of from these variables. The partial autocorrelation function is defined for by:
- , where is the autocorrelation function.
- For , is the correlation coefficient of and .
By stationarity, does not depend on .
Remarks
Equivalently, , the last coefficient of the best linear predictor of from , provided the matrix is nonsingular. The sample partial autocorrelation is obtained by putting the sample autocovariances into these formulas, for instance by the Durbin–Levinson recursion.
Example: let be a stationary autoregressive model of order with and uncorrelated noise . Then . For , the best linear predictor of from is , and the residual is uncorrelated with , so .
Non-example: a random walk is not weakly stationary, so clause 1 and clause 2 do not define a function of the lag alone.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
