Pochhammer symbol

Builds on Factorial

Definition

Let aa be an element of a commutative ring, for example a complex number, and let nn be a natural number. The Pochhammer symbol (or rising factorial) of aa of order nn is (a)n=a(a+1)(a+2)⋯(a+n−1)=∏i=0n−1(a+i).(a)_n = a (a + 1) (a + 2) \cdots (a + n - 1) = \prod_{i=0}^{n-1} (a + i). For n=0n = 0 the product is empty, and (a)0=1(a)_0 = 1.

Remarks

Example: (1)n=1⋅2⋯n=n!(1)_n = 1 \cdot 2 \cdots n = n!, the factorial; and (2)3=2⋅3⋅4=24(2)_3 = 2 \cdot 3 \cdot 4 = 24. For a negative integer a=−ma = -m and n>mn > m, one factor is 00, so (−m)n=0(-m)_n = 0; this is why hypergeometric series with such a parameter terminate. Other notations are an‾a^{\overline{n}} and a(n)a^{(n)}. The rising factorial of aa is (−1)n(-1)^n times the falling factorial of −a-a: (a)n=(−1)n(−a)(−a−1)⋯(−a−n+1)(a)_n = (-1)^n (-a)(-a-1)\cdots(-a-n+1). If a∈ℂa \in \C is not in {0,−1,−2,…}\set{0, -1, -2, \ldots}, then (a)n=Γ(a+n)/Γ(a)(a)_n = \Gamma(a + n)/\Gamma(a), where Γ\Gamma is the gamma function. In Mathlib the rising factorial as a polynomial in aa is ascPochhammer.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
