Pointwise Kan extension formula

Builds on Kan extensionComma categoryColimitLimit

Statement

Let π’œ\mathcal{A} be a small category, let ℬ\mathcal{B} be a locally small category, and let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a category that has all small colimits. Let K ⁣:π’œβ†’β„¬K \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{B} and F ⁣:π’œβ†’π’žF \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{C} be functors. For an object bb of ℬ\mathcal{B}, let (K↓b)(K \downarrow b) be the comma category of pairs (a,f)(a, f) with aa in π’œ\mathcal{A} and f ⁣:K(a)β†’bf \colon K(a) \to b. Let Pb ⁣:(K↓b)β†’π’œP_b \colon (K \downarrow b) \to \mathcal{A} send (a,f)(a, f) to aa. Then the left Kan extension of FF along KK exists, and for each object bb of ℬ\mathcal{B} (LanKF)(b)=colim⁑(F∘Pb ⁣:(K↓b)β†’π’ž).(\mathrm{Lan}_K F)(b) = \operatorname{colim} \big( F \circ P_b \colon (K \downarrow b) \to \mathcal{C} \big).

Remarks

The comma category (K↓b)(K \downarrow b) is small because π’œ\mathcal{A} is small and ℬ\mathcal{B} is locally small, so the colimit exists. A morphism g ⁣:bβ†’bβ€²g \colon b \to b' induces a functor (K↓b)β†’(K↓bβ€²)(K \downarrow b) \to (K \downarrow b') by composing with gg, and hence a map between the colimits; this makes b↦(LanKF)(b)b \mapsto (\mathrm{Lan}_K F)(b) a functor. The component Ξ·a\eta_a is the colimit injection at the object (a,id⁑K(a))(a, \id_{K(a)}). The universal property is checked by turning a natural transformation Fβ‡’G∘KF \Rightarrow G \circ K into a compatible family of cocones, one for each bb.

Dually, suppose that π’ž\mathcal{C} has all small limits. Then (RanKF)(b)(\mathrm{Ran}_K F)(b) is the limit of FF over the comma category (b↓K)(b \downarrow K) of pairs (a,f ⁣:bβ†’K(a))(a, f \colon b \to K(a)). When KK is fully faithful, the unit η ⁣:Fβ‡’(LanKF)∘K\eta \colon F \Rightarrow (\mathrm{Lan}_K F) \circ K is an isomorphism. The reason is that (a,id⁑K(a))(a, \id_{K(a)}) is then a terminal object of (K↓K(a))(K \downarrow K(a)).

Example: view a group GG and a subgroup HH as one-object categories, and let KK be the inclusion. Let FF be a representation of HH on a vector space VV over a field kk. Then the formula gives the induced representation k[G]βŠ—k[H]Vk[G] \otimes_{k[H]} V of GG.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the standard way to show that Kan extensions exist, and it is the version used in most applications. Taking ℬ=𝟏\mathcal{B} = \mathbf{1} recovers the colimit of FF. Taking KK to be the Yoneda embedding of π’œ\mathcal{A} extends FF to a colimit-preserving functor on presheaves. This is the basis of the nerve and realization adjunctions. A Kan extension computed by this formula is called pointwise. In the language of coends the formula reads (LanKF)(b)=∫aℬ(K(a),b)β‹…F(a)(\mathrm{Lan}_K F)(b) = \int^{a} \mathcal{B}(K(a), b) \cdot F(a). Here Sβ‹…cS \cdot c is the coproduct of copies of cc indexed by the set SS.
