Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let μ\mu and ν\nu be finite positive Borel measures on ℝn\R^n with compact supports. Use the kernel ∣x∣2−n\abs{x}^{2-n} when n≥3n \ge 3 and log⁡(1/∣x∣)\log(1/\abs{x}) when n=2n = 2, and assume that the energies I(μ)I(\mu) and I(ν)I(\nu) are finite. When n=2n = 2, assume also that μ(ℝ2)=ν(ℝ2)\mu(\R^2) = \nu(\R^2). Then the mutual energy I(μ,ν)I(\mu, \nu) is finite and I(μ−ν)=I(μ)−2I(μ,ν)+I(ν)≥0,I(\mu - \nu) = I(\mu) - 2 I(\mu, \nu) + I(\nu) \ge 0, with equality if and only if μ=ν\mu = \nu.

Remarks

Proof idea for n≥3n \ge 3: the Fourier transform of ∣x∣2−n\abs{x}^{2-n}, as a tempered distribution, is cn∣ξ∣−2c_n \abs{\xi}^{-2} with a constant cn>0c_n > 0. For λ=μ−ν\lambda = \mu - \nu this gives I(λ)=c ∫ℝn∣λ^(ξ)∣2∣ξ∣2 dξI(\lambda) = c\, \int_{\R^n} \frac{\abs{\hat{\lambda}(\xi)}^2}{\abs{\xi}^2}\, d\xi with a constant c>0c > 0, which is nonnegative and vanishes only when λ^=0\hat\lambda = 0, that is, μ=ν\mu = \nu. In the plane the logarithmic kernel has a similar representation on measures of total mass 00, which is why the masses must agree.

The mass condition is necessary in the plane. Let μ\mu be the uniform probability measure on the circle ∣z∣=R\abs{z} = R with R>1R > 1, and ν=0\nu = 0. Then I(μ−ν)=I(μ)=log⁡(1/R)<0I(\mu - \nu) = I(\mu) = \log(1/R) < 0.

For n≥3n \ge 3 the theorem implies the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality I(μ,ν)2≤I(μ)I(ν)I(\mu, \nu)^2 \le I(\mu) I(\nu), since I(μ−tν)=I(μ)−2t I(μ,ν)+t2I(ν)≥0I(\mu - t\nu) = I(\mu) - 2t\, I(\mu, \nu) + t^2 I(\nu) \ge 0 for every t>0t > 0 and I(μ,ν)≥0I(\mu, \nu) \ge 0; take t=I(μ,ν)/I(ν)t = I(\mu, \nu)/I(\nu) when I(ν)>0I(\nu) > 0.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the key fact of the energy method in potential theory. It makes I(μ−ν)\sqrt{I(\mu - \nu)} a distance on measures of finite energy, and a theorem of Cartan says that positive measures of finite energy are complete for this distance when n≥3n \ge 3. Uniqueness of the equilibrium measure follows: if μ\mu and ν\nu both minimise the energy among probability measures on a compact set, then the energy of 12(μ+ν)\frac12(\mu + \nu) forces I(μ−ν)=0I(\mu - \nu) = 0, so μ=ν\mu = \nu.
