Prime ideal theorem for distributive lattices

Builds on Distributive latticeLattice idealOrder filterPrime ideal of a lattice

Statement

Let LL be a distributive lattice. Let II be an ideal of LL and let FF be a filter of LL with I∩F=∅I \cap F = \emptyset. Then there is a prime ideal PP of LL such that I⊆PI \subseteq P and P∩F=∅P \cap F = \emptyset.

Remarks

The usual proof applies Zorn's lemma to the set of ideals that contain II and are disjoint from FF, ordered by inclusion. Let PP be a maximal one, and suppose x∧y∈Px \wedge y \in P with x∉Px \notin P and y∉Py \notin P. By maximality, the ideals generated by P∪{x}P \cup \set{x} and by P∪{y}P \cup \set{y} meet FF, so f≤p∨xf \le p \vee x and g≤q∨yg \le q \vee y for some f,g∈Ff, g \in F and p,q∈Pp, q \in P. Then f∧g≤(p∨q)∨(x∧y)f \wedge g \le (p \vee q) \vee (x \wedge y) by distributivity, so f∧g∈P∩Ff \wedge g \in P \cap F, a contradiction.

Example: in the lattice of divisors of 1212, with gcd⁡\gcd as meet and lcm⁡\lcm as join, take I={1,2}I = \set{1, 2} and F={3,6,12}F = \set{3, 6, 12}. The set P={1,2,4}P = \set{1, 2, 4} of divisors not divisible by 33 is a prime ideal with I⊆PI \subseteq P and P∩F=∅P \cap F = \emptyset.

Distributivity is necessary. In the diamond lattice M3 with middle elements a,b,ca, b, c, the proper ideals are {0}\set{0} and {0,x}\set{0, x} for a middle element xx. None of them is prime: for instance a∧b=0a \wedge b = 0, while neither aa nor bb lies in {0,c}\set{0, c}. So the ideal {0}\set{0} and the filter {1}\set{1} admit no separating prime ideal.

The Boolean prime ideal theorem is the special case of Boolean algebras. Over ZF set theory, the two statements are equivalent, and both are strictly weaker than the axiom of choice.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the key step in representing a distributive lattice as a lattice of sets: map aa to the set of prime filters that contain it. Separating a≰ba \not\le b by a prime ideal containing bb and missing aa shows that this map is injective. This is the basis of Stone's representation theorem for distributive lattices and of Priestley duality. It needs a form of choice, and over ZF it is equivalent to the Boolean prime ideal theorem.
