Projective line over a ring
Definition
Let be an associative ring with identity, and let be its group of units. A pair is admissible if there are such that the matrix lies in the general linear group . The projective line over is the set where .
Remarks
The group acts on by . If is commutative, is admissible if and only if . Indeed, if then has determinant ; conversely the first row of an invertible matrix generates , by expanding its determinant.
Example: if is a field , every is admissible, and is the usual projective line .
Example: for , admissible means and , so is in bijection with by .
Non-example: in , the pair is not admissible, because .
