Prüfer sequence
Builds on Tree
Definition
Let be an integer and let be a tree with vertex set . The Prüfer sequence of is the sequence that this process gives. Let . For , let be the leaf of with the smallest label. Let be the unique neighbour of in , and let .
Remarks
The map is a bijection from the labelled trees on to . This proves Cayley's formula. A vertex appears times in the sequence. Thus the leaves are the labels that do not appear. Example: the star with centre on has the sequence .
