Functional analysis Theorem

Pythagorean theorem in an inner product space

Builds on Orthogonal vectorsNorm induced by an inner product

Statement

Let VV be an inner product space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C, with the induced norm ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot}. If x,y∈Vx, y \in V are orthogonal, then ∥x+y∥2=∥x∥2+∥y∥2.\norm{x + y}^2 = \norm{x}^2 + \norm{y}^2.

Remarks

The proof: ∥x+y∥2=∥x∥2+2Re⁡⟨x,y⟩+∥y∥2\norm{x + y}^2 = \norm{x}^2 + 2 \operatorname{Re} \langle x, y \rangle + \norm{y}^2. For pairwise orthogonal x1,…,xkx_1, \dots, x_k, ∥x1+⋯+xk∥2=∥x1∥2+⋯+∥xk∥2\norm{x_1 + \cdots + x_k}^2 = \norm{x_1}^2 + \cdots + \norm{x_k}^2. In a real space, the converse holds; in a complex space, the equality only gives Re⁡⟨x,y⟩=0\operatorname{Re} \langle x, y \rangle = 0.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
