Quaternion group
Builds on GroupCentre of a group
Description
The quaternion group is the set of quaternions, with quaternion multiplication as the operation. The multiplication follows from the rules , where commutes with each element. These rules give , , and , , . The group has order , and it is not abelian.
Remarks
The element is the only element of order , and the six elements have order . The centre and the commutator subgroup of are both , and is the Klein four-group. Each subgroup of is normal, although is not abelian. The groups and are not isomorphic, because has five elements of order .
