Centre of a group

Builds on Group

Definition

Let GG be a group. The centre of GG is the set Z(G)={z∈G:zg=gz for all g∈G}Z(G) = \{z \in G : zg = gz \text{ for all } g \in G\}.

Remarks

The centre is an abelian normal subgroup of GG, and it is characteristic. The group GG is abelian if and only if Z(G)=GZ(G) = G. The centre of the symmetric group SnS_n is trivial for n≥3n \geq 3. The centre of GLn(ℝ)\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R}) is the set of the nonzero scalar matrices λI\lambda I.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
