Racah polynomials
Builds on Pochhammer symbolGeneralized hypergeometric function
Definition
Let be an integer, let be real numbers, and assume that one of , , equals . Write for the Pochhammer symbol and set . For , the Racah polynomial of degree is that is, the terminating generalized hypergeometric series , assuming the denominators do not vanish.
Remarks
Since , each is a polynomial of degree in . Example: . They are orthogonal on for the weight that is, for ; the weight is positive for suitable ranges of the parameters. The balanced condition holds: the sum of the lower parameters exceeds the sum of the upper ones by . Non-example: with , the degree is not allowed, since the term has the factor in its denominator.
