Random walk as a difference equation
Builds on Random walkIndependent and identically distributed random variables
Example
Let be independent and identically distributed random variables with . The simple symmetric random walk on is the solution of the stochastic difference equation It has the form with , so it is a stochastic difference equation. Solving the recursion gives . Taking expectations in the equation gives the deterministic difference equation , so . Squaring gives , and since is independent of with mean , , so .
Probabilities of the walk also solve difference equations. Fix an integer and let be the probability that the walk started at reaches before . Conditioning on the first step gives for , with and . This linear recurrence has characteristic polynomial , so , and the boundary values give .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
