Field theory and polynomials Polynomials in one variable Theorem
Rational root theorem
Builds on Root of a polynomial
Statement
Let with and . Let be a rational root of , with , and . Then divides and divides .
Remarks
The proof: multiply by . Then and , and gives the two divisibilities. For example, the only possible rational roots of are and . Evaluation shows that is a root. The same statement holds over every unique factorisation domain and its field of fractions. For a monic , every rational root is an integer.
