Definition
Let and let be the Lp space of integrable functions for Lebesgue measure. For let be the -th Riesz transform, which maps each to a tempered distribution . The real Hardy space is the set of such that each , , is given by a function in . It is a Banach space with the norm
Remarks
For the only Riesz transform is the Hilbert transform , so . Equivalent definitions use maximal functions or atoms. Fix a Schwartz function with and let . Then exactly when is a tempered distribution with , and the two norms are comparable. Every has .
Example: and . For , using , , which is bounded by . Near the points , and , has only logarithmic singularities, which are integrable. So and .
Non-example: on is integrable but not in . Its Hilbert transform is , which behaves like as , so it is not integrable. This agrees with the fact that .
