Combinatorics Theorem

Recurrence for derangements

Builds on DerangementNumber of derangements

Statement

Let nn be a natural number, and let DmD_m be the number of derangements of an mm-element set. Then Dn+2=(n+1) (Dn+1+Dn).D_{n+2} = (n + 1)\,(D_{n+1} + D_n).

Remarks

Together with D0=1D_0 = 1 and D1=0D_1 = 0, the recurrence gives all values: 1,0,1,2,9,44,265,…1, 0, 1, 2, 9, 44, 265, \dots A proof looks at a derangement σ\sigma of {1,…,n+2}\{1, \dots, n + 2\} and the value i=σ(n+2)i = \sigma(n+2). There are n+1n + 1 choices of ii. The case σ(i)=n+2\sigma(i) = n + 2 gives DnD_n derangements, and the other case gives Dn+1D_{n+1}. Another recurrence is Dn+1=(n+1)Dn+(−1)n+1D_{n+1} = (n + 1) D_n + (-1)^{n+1}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
