Recurrence relations for Bessel functions

Builds on Bessel function of the first kindBessel function of the second kindHankel functions

Statement

Let ν∈ℂ\nu \in \C and let CνC_\nu be any one of JνJ_\nu, YνY_\nu, Hν(1)H^{(1)}_\nu, Hν(2)H^{(2)}_\nu. These are a Bessel function of the first kind, of the second kind, or a Hankel function. Then for z∈ℂ∖(−∞,0]z \in \C \setminus (-\infty, 0]:

  1. Cν−1(z)+Cν+1(z)=2νz Cν(z)C_{\nu - 1}(z) + C_{\nu + 1}(z) = \frac{2\nu}{z}\, C_\nu(z).
  2. Cν−1(z)−Cν+1(z)=2 Cν′(z)C_{\nu - 1}(z) - C_{\nu + 1}(z) = 2\, C_\nu'(z).

Remarks

For JνJ_\nu both relations follow by comparing coefficients in the power series Jν(z)=∑m≥0(−1)mm! Γ(m+ν+1)(z2)2m+νJ_\nu(z) = \sum_{m \ge 0} \frac{(-1)^m}{m!\, \Gamma(m + \nu + 1)} \left( \frac{z}{2} \right)^{2m + \nu}. Equivalent forms are (zνCν)′=zνCν−1\left( z^\nu C_\nu \right)' = z^\nu C_{\nu-1} and (z−νCν)′=−z−νCν+1\left( z^{-\nu} C_\nu \right)' = -z^{-\nu} C_{\nu+1}. For YνY_\nu they follow from the definition through J±νJ_{\pm\nu} and a limit, and for the Hankel functions by linearity. Example: with ν=0\nu = 0 the second relation and J−1=−J1J_{-1} = -J_1 give J0′=−J1J_0' = -J_1. Example: from J1/2(x)=2πxsin⁡xJ_{1/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \sin x and J−1/2(x)=2πxcos⁡xJ_{-1/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \cos x, the first relation with ν=12\nu = \frac{1}{2} gives J3/2(x)=2πx(sin⁡xx−cos⁡x)J_{3/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \left( \frac{\sin x}{x} - \cos x \right).

Going deeper

For a student

The first relation is a three-term recurrence in the order, so tables and software compute Jn(x)J_n(x) for many nn from a few starting values. Forward use of it is unstable for JnJ_n when n>xn > x, and one runs it backward instead (Miller's algorithm). The relations also show that Bessel functions of half-integer order are elementary, which gives the spherical Bessel functions. The modified Bessel functions satisfy the same relations with some signs changed.
