Regularity of minimizers
Builds on Integral functional with a Lagrangian densitySobolev spaceHölder continuity
Definition
Let be a bounded open set, let and . Let be an integral functional for maps . A map in the Sobolev space is a minimiser of if for all . Let and .
- The minimiser is regular (of class ) if it agrees almost everywhere with a map in .
- It is partially regular if there is a relatively closed set of Lebesgue measure zero such that is regular on .
The regularity problem for asks under which conditions on every minimiser is regular or partially regular.
Remarks
Here is the space of maps whose -th derivatives are locally Hölder continuous with exponent .
Example: for and , minimisers are weak solutions of . By Weyl's lemma they are harmonic, hence smooth, so they are regular for every and .
Non-example: for , and on , the function is a minimiser among maps with its boundary values, since . It is Lipschitz but not , so it is not regular in the sense of clause 1. Here is not convex in .
For and smooth, uniformly convex with bounded second derivatives, every minimiser in is smooth, by the De Giorgi–Nash–Moser theorem and Schauder estimates. For this fails in general, and partial regularity is the typical result for smooth, uniformly convex or strongly quasiconvex integrands with suitable growth.
