Renewal equation
Builds on Renewal theory
Example
Let be the distribution function of a nonnegative random variable with , and let be a locally bounded function on . The renewal equation for an unknown locally bounded function on is When has a density , the integral is , and the equation is a Volterra equation of convolution type of the second kind.
In renewal theory, let be independent waiting times with distribution function , and let be the number of with . Conditioning on the first waiting time shows that the renewal function solves the renewal equation with :
Check on the exponential case: let with , so . Then is a Poisson process of rate , and . Indeed , and adding gives .
Remarks
The renewal equation has a unique locally bounded solution, , that is, . Let . Taking Laplace transforms gives , as in the Laplace transform method. For the exponential case, and , so , the transform of .
