Riemann P-symbol
Builds on Riemann's differential equationMöbius transformation
Definition
Let be distinct points of the Riemann sphere, and let with . The Riemann P-symbol is the table It denotes the set of solutions of Riemann's differential equation with singular points . The exponents are at , at and at . When one of the points is , the equation is the limiting form in which the factors involving that point are dropped.
Remarks
The order of the columns, and the order of the two exponents within a column, do not matter. Two basic rules hold.
- If is a Möbius transformation, then the P-symbol with points and variable equals the P-symbol with points , the same exponents, and variable .
- If are finite, then for all ,
Example: the hypergeometric function satisfies and the exponents add up to , as required.
Non-example: a table whose six exponents do not add up to is not a valid P-symbol. No second-order Fuchsian equation has exactly those three singular points with those exponents.
Rule 2 is consistent with the sum condition: the shifts , , appear twice each and add up to .
