Definition
Let and . Let , where is the gamma function. For a Schwartz function on , the -th Riesz transform of is the principal value
Remarks
With , the Fourier transform of is So on , and each is bounded on with norm . Each extends to a bounded operator on for .
Example: for , and the kernel is . So is the Hilbert transform, with multiplier .
Non-example: the kernel , with the same homogeneity but without the odd factor , does not define a principal value operator. It has no cancellation, and grows like .
The kernel is odd, homogeneous of degree , and smooth away from , which makes a singular integral operator.
