Right adjoints preserve limits

Builds on Adjoint functorsLimitPreservation of limits

Statement

Let G ⁣:π’Ÿβ†’π’žG \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathcal{C} be a functor that has a left adjoint F ⁣:π’žβ†’π’ŸF \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D}. Then GG preserves every limit that exists in π’Ÿ\mathcal{D}. Dually, FF preserves every colimit that exists in π’ž\mathcal{C}.

Remarks

Let (L,Ξ»)(L, \lambda) be a limit cone of a diagram K ⁣:Jβ†’π’ŸK \colon J \to \mathcal{D}. For an object cc, cones from cc over GKG K match, by the adjunction, with cones from FcF c over KK. These match with morphisms Fcβ†’LF c \to L, and so with morphisms cβ†’GLc \to G L. So (GL,GΞ»)(G L, G \lambda) is a limit cone.

Example: the forgetful functor from groups to sets has a left adjoint, the free group. So the underlying set of a product or an equalizer of groups is the product or the equalizer of the underlying sets. The free group functor preserves coproducts: the free group on XβŠ”YX \sqcup Y is the free product of the free groups on XX and on YY.

The theorem gives a test for non-existence. The forgetful functor from groups to sets does not send the initial trivial group to the initial empty set, so it has no right adjoint.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the most used property of adjoint functors. It explains many familiar facts at once, such as that tensor products distribute over direct sums, since βˆ’βŠ—M- \otimes M is left adjoint to Hom⁑(M,βˆ’)\Hom(M, -). It is also the necessary half of the adjoint functor theorems. Those theorems show that, under size conditions, preserving limits is enough for a functor to have a left adjoint.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
