Scalar triple product
Builds on Cross product
Statement
Let , and be vectors in . Let be the cross product and let be the dot product. The scalar triple product of , and is the real number . It is equal to the determinant of the matrix whose rows are , and :
Remarks
A cyclic shift of the three vectors does not change the value: . A swap of two vectors changes its sign. The absolute value is the volume of the parallelepiped with the edges , and . The scalar triple product is if and only if , and are linearly dependent. This happens exactly when they lie in one plane through .
