Schur's lemma in abelian categories

Builds on Abelian categorySubobjectKernelMonomorphismEpimorphismZero morphismDivision ring

Statement

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} be an abelian category. An object SS of 𝒜\mathcal{A} is simple if SS is not a zero object and its only subobjects are 00 and SS. Let SS and TT be simple objects and let f ⁣:S→Tf \colon S \to T be a morphism. Then ff is either the zero morphism or an isomorphism. In particular, the endomorphism ring End⁡(S)\End(S) is a division ring.

Remarks

The kernel of ff is a subobject of SS, so it is 00 or SS. The image of ff is a subobject of TT, so it is 00 or TT. If f≠0f \ne 0, then the kernel is not SS and the image is not 00. So ff is a monomorphism and an epimorphism, and in an abelian category such a morphism is an isomorphism. For End⁡(S)\End(S), every nonzero element is invertible, and 1≠01 \ne 0 because SS is not zero. In the category of modules over a ring, the simple objects are the simple modules, and one gets the classical Schur's lemma. The simplicity hypothesis is needed: multiplication by 22 on the ℤ\Z-module ℤ\Z is nonzero and not an isomorphism, and ℤ\Z is not simple since 2ℤ2\Z is a proper nonzero submodule.

For a student

The lemma is the first step in studying objects of finite length, which are built from simple objects by extensions as in the Jordan–Hölder theorem. It shows that Hom⁡(S,T)=0\Hom(S, T) = 0 for non-isomorphic simple objects and that End⁡(S)\End(S) is a division ring. In representation theory over an algebraically closed field kk, a further argument with eigenvalues gives End⁡(S)=k\End(S) = k for finite-dimensional simple representations; that sharper form needs the extra hypotheses.
