Statement
Let be an open interval, let be twice continuously differentiable, and let with and derivative . The secant method starts from two points in and sets stopping if . Then there is with such that for all distinct :
- all iterates are defined and lie in , and ;
- the errors satisfy for some points in the smallest interval containing , and .
Remarks
The error formula comes from writing with divided differences: , and the mean value theorem for divided differences turns these into and . Let be the maximum of over divided by twice the minimum of over . Choose so that on and ; then , which gives clause 1. Example: for , , , the iterates are , , , , approaching . The condition matters. At a double zero such as that of , the method still converges from nearby points on the same side of , but only linearly, with ratio tending to . Far from a zero the method can fail, for example when and the step is undefined.
Going deeper
For a student
The error recursion with is the source of the superlinear convergence of the secant method, with order the golden ratio . Newton's method has order but needs at each step; per function evaluation, the secant method is often faster. Keeping a bracket instead of the last two points gives regula falsi, which is safe but can be slow.
