Set of uniqueness
Builds on Trigonometric series
Definition
Let be the circle. A subset is a set of uniqueness if the following holds. Whenever a trigonometric series with complex coefficients satisfies then for all . A subset of that is not a set of uniqueness is a set of multiplicity.
Remarks
Sets of uniqueness are often called U-sets, and sets of multiplicity M-sets. A subset of a set of uniqueness is again a set of uniqueness.
Example: the empty set is a set of uniqueness; this is Cantor's uniqueness theorem. Every countable set is also a set of uniqueness, a result of W. H. Young.
Non-example: let contain an open arc of . Choose a nonzero infinitely differentiable function on that vanishes outside . Its Fourier series converges absolutely to at every point, so it converges to outside . Its coefficients are not all , because , so is a set of multiplicity.
More generally every set of positive Lebesgue measure is a set of multiplicity, and a Borel set of uniqueness has measure zero. The converse fails: Menshov's example is a closed set of measure zero that is a set of multiplicity. The middle-thirds Cantor set is a set of uniqueness.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
