Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces Wavelets Example
Shannon wavelet
Example
Write for and . Use the Fourier transform . The real Shannon wavelet is Its Fourier transform is the indicator function of the set , up to a set of measure zero.
Check. The transform of is the indicator of . The transform of is the indicator of . Their difference is the indicator of the two bands. The second formula follows from .
Remarks
The functions , , form an orthonormal basis of . The reason is that the two bands, shifted by multiples of , tile the line, and their dyadic dilates tile . The scaling function of the underlying multiresolution analysis is , and its approximation spaces are spaces of band-limited functions. The Shannon wavelet is perfectly localized in frequency but poorly localized in time: decays only like , so is not integrable. The Meyer wavelet smooths the sharp edges of to gain fast decay in time.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
