Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a closed oriented Riemannian manifold of dimension 4k4k. Let Ω∗(M)=⨁pΩp(M)\Omega^*(M) = \bigoplus_p \Omega^p(M) be the space of smooth complex-valued differential forms, with exterior derivative dd, Hodge star ⋆\star and codifferential δ\delta, the formal adjoint of dd. Define τ ⁣:Ω∗(M)→Ω∗(M)\tau \colon \Omega^*(M) \to \Omega^*(M) by τω=ip(p−1)+2k⋆ωfor ω∈Ωp(M).\tau \omega = i^{p(p-1) + 2k} \star \omega \quad \text{for } \omega \in \Omega^p(M). Then τ2=id⁡\tau^2 = \id and τ(d+δ)=−(d+δ)τ\tau (d + \delta) = -(d + \delta) \tau. Let Ω±(M)\Omega^\pm(M) be the ±1\pm 1 eigenspaces of τ\tau. The signature operator of MM is the restriction D+=d+δ ⁣:Ω+(M)→Ω−(M).D^+ = d + \delta \colon \Omega^+(M) \to \Omega^-(M).

Remarks

The operator d+δd + \delta is elliptic with square the Hodge Laplacian, so D+D^+ is an elliptic operator of order 11. Its index equals the signature σ(M)\sigma(M) of the intersection form on H2k(M;ℝ)H^{2k}(M; \R). Indeed, the harmonic forms of degrees p≠2kp \ne 2k contribute equally to the kernel and the cokernel and cancel. On harmonic 2k2k-forms τ=⋆\tau = \star, whose ±1\pm 1 eigenspaces are the self-dual and anti-self-dual forms. The Atiyah–Singer index theorem applied to D+D^+ gives the Hirzebruch signature theorem.

Example: on 2k2k-forms, τ=i2k(2k−1)+2k⋆=i4k2⋆=⋆\tau = i^{2k(2k-1) + 2k} \star = i^{4k^2} \star = \star. For M=ℂP2M = \C P^2 (k=1k = 1), the harmonic 22-forms are the multiples of the Kähler form ωFS\omega_{FS}, which is self-dual, so σ(ℂP2)=1\sigma(\C P^2) = 1 and the index of D+D^+ is 11.

Non-example: the operator d+δ ⁣:Ωeven(M)→Ωodd(M)d + \delta \colon \Omega^{\mathrm{even}}(M) \to \Omega^{\mathrm{odd}}(M) uses the splitting by degree instead of the splitting by τ\tau. It is the de Rham or Euler operator, and its index is the Euler characteristic, not the signature; for ℂP2\C P^2 it is 33.
