Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and let GG be a group. Let α ⁣:G→Aut⁡(R)\alpha \colon G \to \Aut(R) be a group homomorphism, written g↦αgg \mapsto \alpha_g; it is an action of GG on RR by ring automorphisms. The skew group ring R∗GR * G, also written R⋊αGR \rtimes_\alpha G, is the set of finite formal sums ∑g∈Grgg\sum_{g \in G} r_g g with rg∈Rr_g \in R. Addition is termwise, and multiplication is the biadditive extension of (rg)(sh)=r αg(s) gh(r,s∈R, g,h∈G).(r g)(s h) = r \, \alpha_g(s) \, gh \qquad (r, s \in R, \ g, h \in G).

Remarks

The product is associative because αgh=αg∘αh\alpha_{gh} = \alpha_g \circ \alpha_h: both ((rg)(sh))(tk)((rg)(sh))(tk) and (rg)((sh)(tk))(rg)((sh)(tk)) equal rαg(s)αgh(t) ghkr \alpha_g(s) \alpha_{gh}(t) \, ghk. The identity is 1⋅e1 \cdot e, where ee is the identity of GG, and RR is a subring through r↦rer \mapsto r e. If α\alpha is trivial, R∗GR * G is the group ring R[G]R[G]. Example: let G={e,c}G = \set{e, c} act on ℂ\C by complex conjugation, αc(z)=zˉ\alpha_c(z) = \bar z. Then R∗G=ℂ∗GR * G = \C * G has dimension 44 over ℝ\R. The map sending zz to multiplication by zz and cc to conjugation, both as ℝ\R-linear maps of ℂ=ℝ2\C = \R^2, is an isomorphism onto the matrix ring M2(ℝ)M_2(\R). Non-example: if α ⁣:G→Aut⁡(R)\alpha \colon G \to \Aut(R) is a map that is not a homomorphism, the same formula fails associativity, since (1g)((1h)(se))=αg(αh(s))gh(1g)((1h)(s e)) = \alpha_g(\alpha_h(s)) gh while ((1g)(1h))(se)=αgh(s)gh((1g)(1h))(s e) = \alpha_{gh}(s) gh. When a twisting cocycle is also allowed, ghg h is replaced by a scalar multiple of ghgh, and one gets a crossed product.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
