Statement

Let KK be a field and let AA be a central simple algebra over KK. Let BB be a finite-dimensional associative algebra over KK that is a simple ring. Let f,g ⁣:B→Af, g \colon B \to A be homomorphisms of KK-algebras. Then there is an invertible element u∈Au \in A such that g(x)=uf(x)u−1g(x) = u f(x) u^{-1} for all x∈Bx \in B. In particular, every automorphism of the KK-algebra AA is an inner automorphism, that is, a conjugation x↦uxu−1x \mapsto u x u^{-1}.

Remarks

The algebra B⊗KAopB \otimes_K A^{\mathrm{op}} is simple and finite-dimensional, so it has only one simple module up to isomorphism, and its modules are determined by their dimension. The maps ff and gg make AA into two B⊗KAopB \otimes_K A^{\mathrm{op}}-modules, by (b⊗a)⋅x=f(b)xa(b \otimes a) \cdot x = f(b) x a and (b⊗a)⋅x=g(b)xa(b \otimes a) \cdot x = g(b) x a, of the same dimension. An isomorphism φ\varphi from the first to the second commutes with right multiplication by AA, so φ(x)=ux\varphi(x) = u x with u=φ(1)u = \varphi(1) invertible, and compatibility with BB gives uf(b)=g(b)uu f(b) = g(b) u. Example: every automorphism of Mn(K)M_n(K) as a KK-algebra is conjugation X↦PXP−1X \mapsto P X P^{-1} by an invertible matrix PP. Example: any two elements of ℍ\mathbb{H} with the same minimal polynomial x2+1x^2 + 1 over ℝ\R, such as ii and jj, are conjugate in ℍ\mathbb{H}.

For a student

The theorem is used constantly in the theory of central simple algebras. It shows that Aut⁡K(Mn(K))≅PGLn(K)\Aut_K(M_n(K)) \cong \mathrm{PGL}_n(K), which identifies central simple algebras split by a Galois extension LL with classes in H1(Gal⁡(L/K),PGLn(L))H^1(\Gal(L/K), \mathrm{PGL}_n(L)). Applied to a subfield LL of AA and its Galois conjugates, it is a key step in building the crossed product description of central simple algebras. Together with the double centralizer theorem it controls how subfields sit inside central simple algebras.
