Definition

Let kk be a field and let HH be a Hopf algebra over kk with comultiplication Δ\Delta and counit ε\varepsilon. Write Δ(h)=∑h(1)⊗h(2)\Delta(h) = \sum h_{(1)} \otimes h_{(2)} in Sweedler notation. A left HH-module algebra is an associative algebra AA over kk with identity that is also a left HH-module, written h⋅ah \cdot a, such that:

  1. h⋅(ab)=∑(h(1)⋅a)(h(2)⋅b)h \cdot (ab) = \sum (h_{(1)} \cdot a)(h_{(2)} \cdot b) for all h∈Hh \in H and a,b∈Aa, b \in A.
  2. h⋅1A=ε(h)1Ah \cdot 1_A = \varepsilon(h) 1_A for all h∈Hh \in H.

The smash product A#HA \# H is the vector space A⊗kHA \otimes_k H, with a⊗ha \otimes h written a#ha \# h, and with the multiplication (a#h)(b#g)=∑a (h(1)⋅b)#h(2)g.(a \# h)(b \# g) = \sum a \, (h_{(1)} \cdot b) \# h_{(2)} g.

Remarks

With this product A#HA \# H is an associative algebra with identity 1#11 \# 1, and a↦a#1a \mapsto a \# 1 and h↦1#hh \mapsto 1 \# h embed AA and HH as subalgebras. Example: let GG be a group acting on AA by algebra automorphisms and let H=kGH = kG, with Δ(g)=g⊗g\Delta(g) = g \otimes g and ε(g)=1\varepsilon(g) = 1. Then clause 1 reads g⋅(ab)=(g⋅a)(g⋅b)g \cdot (ab) = (g \cdot a)(g \cdot b), clause 2 reads g⋅1=1g \cdot 1 = 1, and the product is (a#g)(b#h)=a(g⋅b)#gh(a \# g)(b \# h) = a (g \cdot b) \# gh, so A#kGA \# kG is the skew group ring A∗GA * G. Example: if H=U(𝔤)H = U(\mathfrak g) for a Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak g, with Δ(x)=x⊗1+1⊗x\Delta(x) = x \otimes 1 + 1 \otimes x for x∈𝔤x \in \mathfrak g, clause 1 says that each xx acts by a derivation of AA. Non-example: let G={e,g}G = \set{e, g} have order 22, A=k[x]A = k[x], and let gg act linearly by g⋅1=1g \cdot 1 = 1 and g⋅xn=−xng \cdot x^n = -x^n for n≥1n \ge 1. This is a kGkG-module with clause 2, but g⋅(x⋅x)=−x2g \cdot (x \cdot x) = -x^2 while (g⋅x)(g⋅x)=x2(g \cdot x)(g \cdot x) = x^2, so clause 1 fails when the characteristic of kk is not 22.
