Definition

Let (Xt)t∈ℤ(X_t)_{t \in \Z} be a real weakly stationary process with autocovariance γ\gamma satisfying ∑h∣γ(h)∣<∞\sum_{h} \abs{\gamma(h)} < \infty. Its spectral density is f(ω)=12π∑h∈ℤγ(h)e−ihω,ω∈[−π,π],f(\omega) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \sum_{h \in \Z} \gamma(h) e^{-i h \omega}, \qquad \omega \in [-\pi, \pi], so that γ(h)=∫−ππeihωf(ω) dω\gamma(h) = \int_{-\pi}^{\pi} e^{i h \omega} f(\omega) \, d\omega. Spectral density estimation is the construction of estimators f^n(ω)\hat f_n(\omega) of f(ω)f(\omega) from observations X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n. Such an estimator is a function of the data that should be close to ff for large nn.

Remarks

Nonparametric estimators smooth the periodogram InI_n. Let γ^\hat\gamma be the sample autocovariance, defined with the autocorrelation function. Let ww be a weight function with w(0)=1w(0) = 1, and let r=rnr = r_n be a truncation point. A lag-window estimator has the form f^n(ω)=12π∑∣h∣≤rw(h/r) γ^(h)e−ihω.\hat f_n(\omega) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \sum_{\abs{h} \le r} w(h / r) \, \hat\gamma(h) e^{-i h \omega}. Under standard conditions, such as rn→∞r_n \to \infty and rn/n→0r_n / n \to 0, it is consistent. Averaging periodograms of several segments of the data, as in the methods of Bartlett and Welch, is another common choice.

Parametric estimators fit an ARMA model and use its spectral density σ22π∣θ(e−iω)∣2/∣ϕ(e−iω)∣2\frac{\sigma^2}{2\pi} \abs{\theta(e^{-i\omega})}^2 / \abs{\phi(e^{-i\omega})}^2.

Example: for a white noise with variance σ2\sigma^2, the spectral density is the constant σ2/(2π)\sigma^2 / (2\pi), and the averaged estimate 12π⋅1m∑jIn(ωj)\frac{1}{2\pi} \cdot \frac{1}{m} \sum_j I_n(\omega_j) over mm Fourier frequencies near ω\omega estimates it.

The rescaled periodogram In(ω)/(2π)I_n(\omega) / (2\pi) is the simplest estimator, but it is not consistent. Under standard conditions, for 0<∣ω∣<π0 < \abs{\omega} < \pi, it is asymptotically unbiased while its variance tends to f(ω)2f(\omega)^2 rather than to 00.
