Definition

Let (X,ℬ,μ)(X, \mathcal{B}, \mu) and (Y,𝒞,ν)(Y, \mathcal{C}, \nu) be probability spaces, and let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X and S ⁣:Y→YS \colon Y \to Y be invertible measure-preserving transformations with measurable measure-preserving inverses. Let UTU_T and USU_S be their Koopman operators on L2(μ)L^2(\mu) and L2(ν)L^2(\nu).

  1. TT and SS are spectrally isomorphic if there is a unitary operator W ⁣:L2(μ)→L2(ν)W \colon L^2(\mu) \to L^2(\nu) with WUT=USWW U_T = U_S W.
  2. A spectral invariant is a property of such transformations that holds for SS whenever it holds for TT and TT, SS are spectrally isomorphic.
  3. TT has discrete spectrum if L2(μ)L^2(\mu) has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors of UTU_T.

The spectral theory of dynamical systems is the study of transformations up to spectral isomorphism, through the spectrum and the spectral measures of UTU_T.

Remarks

Isomorphic transformations are spectrally isomorphic: an isomorphism φ\varphi with φ∘T=S∘φ\varphi \circ T = S \circ \varphi gives Wf=f∘φ−1W f = f \circ \varphi^{-1}.

Example of a spectral invariant: ergodicity, since TT is ergodic if and only if the eigenvalue 11 of UTU_T has multiplicity 11. Weak mixing is another: it holds if and only if 11 is a simple eigenvalue and UTU_T has no other eigenvalue. An irrational rotation x↦x+α mod 1x \mapsto x + \alpha \bmod 1 has discrete spectrum, with basis e2πikxe^{2\pi i k x} and eigenvalues e2πikαe^{2\pi i k \alpha}, k∈ℤk \in \Z.

Non-example: the Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy is not a spectral invariant. Two Bernoulli shifts with different entropies, such as the (1/2,1/2)(1/2, 1/2) and the (1/3,1/3,1/3)(1/3, 1/3, 1/3) shifts, are spectrally isomorphic. Both Koopman operators have countable Lebesgue spectrum on the orthogonal complement of the constants.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
