Splitting lemma
Builds on Abelian categoryShort exact sequenceSplit exact sequenceBiproductFive lemma
Statement
Let be an abelian category and let be a short exact sequence in . Let be the biproduct, with inclusion and projection . The following are equivalent:
- there is a morphism with ;
- there is a morphism with ;
- the sequence is split: there is an isomorphism with and .
Remarks
From (3), the morphisms and give (1) and (2). From (1), the morphism satisfies and , and it is an isomorphism by the five lemma applied to the map from the given sequence to . From (2), one argues dually, using through and . Example: in , the quotient map has no right inverse. A right inverse would send the generator of to an element of of order at most , that is, to or , and both map to . So the sequence does not split, in agreement with . The lemma fails for non-abelian groups: for the symmetric group, has a right inverse of the quotient map, but is not isomorphic to .

For a student
The lemma is the standard test for splitting. For example, every short exact sequence ending in a projective object splits, since the identity of lifts along . Dually, every short exact sequence starting with an injective object splits. For vector spaces every short exact sequence splits, because a basis of can be lifted to . In the theory of extensions, the split sequence is the zero element of . For groups, condition (2) alone gives a semidirect product, and condition (1) gives a direct product.
