Stably finite ring
Builds on Dedekind-finite ringMatrix ring
Definition
Let be a ring with . For , let be the matrix ring of matrices over . The ring is stably finite if is Dedekind-finite for every . That is, for all and , the equation implies .
Remarks
Example: every commutative ring is stably finite. If in , then , so has the inverse , and .
Non-example: the ring of linear maps on an infinite-dimensional vector space is not stably finite, since already contains with .
Taking shows that a stably finite ring is Dedekind-finite. The converse fails: there are Dedekind-finite rings for which is not Dedekind-finite. Equivalently, is stably finite if for every the left module is not isomorphic to for a nonzero module . A nonzero stably finite ring has invariant basis number.
