Definition

Let x ⁣:[0,∞)→ℂx \colon [0, \infty) \to \C be a function and let T>0T > 0 be a sampling period. The impulse-sampled signal is x∗(t)=∑n=0∞x(nT) δ(t−nT),x^*(t) = \sum_{n = 0}^{\infty} x(nT) \, \delta(t - nT), where δ\delta is the Dirac delta. The starred transform of xx is the Laplace transform of x∗x^*: X∗(s)=∑n=0∞x(nT) e−nTs,X^*(s) = \sum_{n = 0}^{\infty} x(nT) \, e^{-nTs}, for the complex ss where this series converges absolutely.

Remarks

The impulse-sampled signal is xx times a Dirac comb of period TT, restricted to t≥0t \ge 0. If X(z)X(z) is the unilateral Z-transform of the samples xn=x(nT)x_n = x(nT), then X∗(s)=X(esT)X^*(s) = X(e^{sT}). Example: for x(t)=e−atx(t) = e^{-at} with a∈ℂa \in \C, X∗(s)=∑n≥0e−nT(s+a)=1/(1−e−T(s+a))X^*(s) = \sum_{n \ge 0} e^{-n T (s + a)} = 1/(1 - e^{-T(s + a)}) for Re⁡(s+a)>0\operatorname{Re}(s + a) > 0. Non-example: for x(t)=et2x(t) = e^{t^2} the terms en2T2−nTse^{n^2 T^2 - nTs} do not tend to 00 for any ss, so the series converges nowhere and xx has no starred transform. X∗X^* is periodic in the imaginary direction: X∗(s+2πi/T)=X∗(s)X^*(s + 2\pi i/T) = X^*(s), since e−nT⋅2πi/T=1e^{-nT \cdot 2\pi i/T} = 1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
