Symmetric and self-reciprocal kernels
Builds on Integral transformKernel of an integral transformLp space
Definition
Let be the kernel of an integral transform Let be a class of functions on which is defined, such as the Lebesgue space , with .
- is symmetric if for all .
- is self-reciprocal on (a Fourier kernel) if for every ; that is, implies .
Remarks
Example: is symmetric, since . It is self-reciprocal on : this is the inversion theorem for the Fourier cosine transform, which follows from the Fourier inversion theorem applied to the even extension of . The sine kernel and the Hankel kernel for , with the Bessel function of the first kind, are also symmetric and self-reciprocal. Non-example: the Laplace kernel is symmetric but not self-reciprocal. For , , and tends to as , while .
