Builds on Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle

Statement

Let μ\mu be a probability measure on the unit circle ∂𝔻\partial\mathbb{D} with infinite support, and let Φn\Phi_n be its monic orthogonal polynomials. For a polynomial pp of degree at most nn, let p∗(z)=zn p(1/zˉ)‾p^*(z) = z^n \, \overline{p(1/\bar z)} be its reversed polynomial of order nn; so Φn∗\Phi_n^* has constant term 11.

  1. There are complex numbers α0,α1,α2,…\alpha_0, \alpha_1, \alpha_2, \dots with ∣αn∣<1\abs{\alpha_n} < 1 such that for every n≥0n \ge 0 Φn+1(z)=z Φn(z)−αn‾ Φn∗(z).\Phi_{n+1}(z) = z \, \Phi_n(z) - \overline{\alpha_n} \, \Phi_n^*(z). They are given by αn=−Φn+1(0)‾\alpha_n = -\overline{\Phi_{n+1}(0)} and are called the Verblunsky coefficients of μ\mu.
  2. The norms satisfy ∥Φn+1∥2=(1−∣αn∣2)∥Φn∥2\norm{\Phi_{n+1}}^2 = (1 - \abs{\alpha_n}^2) \norm{\Phi_n}^2, so ∥Φn∥2=∏j=0n−1(1−∣αj∣2)\norm{\Phi_n}^2 = \prod_{j=0}^{n-1} (1 - \abs{\alpha_j}^2).
  3. (Verblunsky's theorem) Let 𝔻\mathbb{D} be the open unit disk. The map μ↦(αn)n≥0\mu \mapsto (\alpha_n)_{n \ge 0} is a bijection from the probability measures on ∂𝔻\partial\mathbb{D} with infinite support onto the sequences in 𝔻\mathbb{D}.

Remarks

For part 1, the polynomial Φn+1−zΦn\Phi_{n+1} - z\Phi_n has degree at most nn. It is orthogonal to z,z2,…,znz, z^2, \dots, z^n, because Φn+1\Phi_{n+1} is, and multiplication by zz is unitary on L2(μ)L^2(\mu) and maps Φn⊥{1,…,zn−1}\Phi_n \perp \set{1, \dots, z^{n-1}} onto zΦn⊥{z,…,zn}z\Phi_n \perp \set{z, \dots, z^n}. The polynomials of degree at most nn orthogonal to z,…,znz, \dots, z^n form a one-dimensional space spanned by Φn∗\Phi_n^*, which gives the recurrence. Taking norms, with ∥zΦn∥=∥Φn∗∥=∥Φn∥\norm{z\Phi_n} = \norm{\Phi_n^*} = \norm{\Phi_n}, gives part 2, and ∥Φn+1∥>0\norm{\Phi_{n+1}} > 0 forces ∣αn∣<1\abs{\alpha_n} < 1. Part 3 builds μ\mu from any sequence in 𝔻\mathbb{D} by running the recurrence and taking a weak limit of the measures ∣φn(eiθ)∣−2dθ/2π\abs{\varphi_n(e^{i\theta})}^{-2} d\theta/2\pi.

Example: for dμ=dθ/2πd\mu = d\theta/2\pi, Φn(z)=zn\Phi_n(z) = z^n and Φn∗=1\Phi_n^* = 1, so Φn+1=zΦn\Phi_{n+1} = z\Phi_n and all αn=0\alpha_n = 0. Conversely, by part 3, the uniform measure is the only one with all Verblunsky coefficients zero.

Infinite support is needed. If μ\mu is supported on NN points, then L2(μ)L^2(\mu) has dimension NN and ΦN\Phi_N has norm 00; the recurrence ends with ∣αN−1∣=1\abs{\alpha_{N-1}} = 1.

Going deeper

For a student

The recurrence turns questions about the measure μ\mu into questions about the sequence (αn)(\alpha_n). For example, Szegő's theorem says that ∑∣αn∣2<∞\sum \abs{\alpha_n}^2 < \infty exactly when log⁡\log of the density of μ\mu is integrable. The αn\alpha_n are the entries of the CMV matrix, the unitary analogue of the Jacobi matrix, which represents multiplication by zz on L2(μ)L^2(\mu). In prediction theory and signal processing the same numbers appear as reflection coefficients, computed by the Levinson algorithm from the moments of μ\mu.
