Definition
Let be a smooth real submanifold of . For , let , where is the tangent space and is spanned by . A function of class satisfies the tangential Cauchy–Riemann equations if for every and every .
Remarks
These are the Cauchy–Riemann equations restricted to the directions in which a function on can be differentiated. When has constant rank, it is the conjugate of a CR structure on , and the solutions are the CR functions; one writes the equations as .
For a hypersurface , with real and on , the space is spanned by the operators so the equations are . Each is tangent to because .
Example: on , with , there is one equation with . The function is a solution, since it does not depend on .
Non-example: on . Then , which is nonzero at points where , so does not satisfy the equations.
For a real curve in , , so every function satisfies the tangential equations.
