General algebraic systems Varieties Theorem
Tarski's HSP formula
Builds on Variety of algebrasClass operators H S P
Statement
Let be a class of algebras of a fixed signature. Let be the smallest class that contains and is closed under the class operators , and . Then By Birkhoff's HSP theorem, is then the variety generated by .
Remarks
Each of , and maps into itself, so . It remains to show that is closed under , and . This follows from the rules , , and from the idempotence of each operator. For example, and . Example: for in the signature of groups, is the class of all abelian groups. Indeed, every abelian group is a quotient of a free abelian group, and a free abelian group embeds in a power of .

For a student
The formula gives the standard way to find the members of for one algebra . Each member of is a homomorphic image of a subalgebra of a power . In particular, the free algebras of are subalgebras of powers of , which is the starting point of the study of free spectra. In the congruence-distributive case, Jónsson's lemma sharpens the formula for the subdirectly irreducible members.
