Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) and (N,h)(N, h) be Riemannian manifolds of dimensions mm and nn, and let u ⁣:M→Nu \colon M \to N be a smooth map. Regard dudu as a section of the bundle T∗M⊗u∗TNT^*M \otimes u^* TN over MM, with the connection ∇\nabla induced by the Levi-Civita connections of gg and hh. The tension field of uu is the section of u∗TNu^* TN τ(u)=tr⁡g∇du=∑i=1m(∇eidu)(ei),\tau(u) = \tr_g \nabla du = \sum_{i=1}^m \big( \nabla_{e_i} du \big)(e_i), where (ei)(e_i) is a local orthonormal frame of TMTM. In local coordinates xix^i on MM and yγy^\gamma on NN, its components are τ(u)γ=Δguγ+∑i,j,α,βgij Γαβγ(u) ∂uα∂xi∂uβ∂xj.\tau(u)^\gamma = \Delta_g u^\gamma + \sum_{i,j,\alpha,\beta} g^{ij} \, \Gamma^\gamma_{\alpha\beta}(u) \, \frac{\partial u^\alpha}{\partial x^i} \frac{\partial u^\beta}{\partial x^j}. Here Δg\Delta_g is the Laplace–Beltrami operator of gg, with the sign for which Δg=d2dx2\Delta_g = \frac{d^2}{dx^2} on ℝ\R. The Γαβγ\Gamma^\gamma_{\alpha\beta} are the Christoffel symbols of hh.

Remarks

If MM is compact without boundary and usu_s is a smooth family of maps with u0=uu_0 = u and variation field V=∂sus∣s=0V = \partial_s u_s |_{s=0}, then the energy satisfies dds∣s=0E(us)=−∫Mh(τ(u),V) dVg.\frac{d}{ds}\Big|_{s=0} E(u_s) = -\int_M h\big(\tau(u), V\big) \, dV_g. So −τ(u)-\tau(u) is the gradient of EE, and uu is a harmonic map exactly when τ(u)=0\tau(u) = 0.

Example: let M=ℝM = \R and γ ⁣:ℝ→N\gamma \colon \R \to N a curve; then τ(γ)=∇γ˙γ˙\tau(\gamma) = \nabla_{\dot\gamma} \dot\gamma, the covariant acceleration, so τ(γ)=0\tau(\gamma) = 0 is the geodesic equation. For γ(t)=(cos⁡t,sin⁡t,0)\gamma(t) = (\cos t, \sin t, 0) into the unit sphere S2S^2, a great circle, τ(γ)=0\tau(\gamma) = 0.

Non-example: the curve γ(t)=(cos⁡t,sin⁡t)\gamma(t) = (\cos t, \sin t) into ℝ2\R^2 with the Euclidean metric has τ(γ)=γ¨=(−cos⁡t,−sin⁡t)≠0\tau(\gamma) = \ddot\gamma = (-\cos t, -\sin t) \ne 0, so it is not harmonic. The same parametrized circle, seen as a map into the unit circle S1S^1, has tension 00, so the tension field depends on the target. For N=ℝnN = \R^n with the Euclidean metric the Christoffel symbols vanish and τ(u)=(Δgu1,…,Δgun)\tau(u) = (\Delta_g u^1, \dots, \Delta_g u^n).
