Tetration
Builds on Real exponentiationIterated functionAbel equationFractional iteration
Example
Let and let be real exponentiation to base . For integers , the tetration is defined by So is a tower of copies of , evaluated from the top down. With , one has , the -th iterate of applied to .
Check for : , , and . And , , , , as claimed.
Remarks
Tetration is the next operation after addition, multiplication and exponentiation: repeated exponentiation, as exponentiation is repeated multiplication. It grows very fast: has decimal digits. Defining for real heights is a problem of fractional iteration of . One asks for a function with and ; its inverse is a solution of the Abel equation for . These conditions alone do not determine , so one adds regularity conditions such as real analyticity. The infinite tower is the limit of as ; see iterated exponentiation.
