The continued fraction of a rational number terminates
Builds on Continued fraction expansion of a real numberEuclidean algorithm
Statement
Let be a real number. The continued fraction expansion of is finite if and only if is rational.
Remarks
If with , the expansion follows the Euclidean algorithm on and . So it stops after finitely many steps. Conversely, a finite simple continued fraction is a rational number. For example, : , , , . So . A rational number has exactly two finite expansions, since when .
