Statement
Let be an algebraically closed field. Let and be complete varieties over , and let be a variety over . Let , and be closed points. Let be a line bundle on . Assume that the restrictions of to , to and to are trivial. Then is trivial.
Remarks
The standard proof uses the seesaw principle, which detects triviality of a line bundle on a product from its restrictions to fibres. It combines this with a reduction to the case where is a curve.
Applied to an abelian variety , the theorem gives a formula on . Let be the projections and , the sum maps to . For every line bundle on , the line bundle is trivial. Let be translation by a point of . Pulling back along maps into gives the theorem of the square: for all points . It also gives for multiplication by . So for a symmetric line bundle, with , one gets .

For a student
The theorem of the cube is a basic tool in the algebraic theory of abelian varieties. The theorem of the square that follows from it gives a homomorphism , , which lands in the points of the dual abelian variety. For an ample this map is an isogeny, the polarization attached to . The formula for symmetric is a key step in computing the degree of multiplication by , and in the theory of heights.
