Definition
Let for and . Let be distinct points, not all on one line, and let be real numbers. The thin plate spline interpolant of these data is the function with , and determined by:
- for ;
- ;
- in .
Remarks
The conditions form a square linear system, and it has exactly one solution when the points are not collinear. This is the polyharmonic spline with and , built from the radial basis function . Among all functions with square integrable second derivatives and , the spline minimizes the bending energy Away from the points, satisfies the biharmonic equation . Example: if for an affine function, then , , satisfy all three clauses, so is that affine function. Non-example: with the single centre fails clause 2, since its only weight is . Thin plate splines are also used with one map per coordinate to define smooth deformations of the plane from matched landmark points.
