Toeplitz index theorem

Statement
Let be the unit circle, let be the Hardy space, and let be a continuous function with no zeros. Then the Toeplitz operator on is a Fredholm operator. Its index is Here is the winding number of the closed curve around .
Remarks
Idea of the proof: for continuous and , the operator is compact. So is an inverse of modulo compact operators, and is Fredholm by Atkinson's theorem. The index is constant along homotopies of nonvanishing symbols, and is homotopic to with . For , is the -th power of the shift, which is injective with cokernel of dimension , so its index is ; for one takes adjoints. The hypothesis that has no zeros is necessary: for continuous , the operator is Fredholm if and only if has no zeros on .

For a student
The theorem is the one-dimensional model of the AtiyahβSinger index theorem: an analytic index equals a topological invariant of the symbol. It is also a basic example of index theory for -algebras, through the Toeplitz extension , whose index map is the winding number up to a sign convention. Higher-dimensional versions for Toeplitz operators on strictly pseudoconvex domains are due to Boutet de Monvel.
