Trace of an integral operator
Builds on Integral equationContinuous kernelTrace of a matrix
Definition
Let and let be a continuous kernel. Let be the integral operator of an integral equation with kernel . The trace of , or of the kernel , is the number
Remarks
Example: for on , the kernel is continuous and . Non-example: the weakly singular kernel on is not continuous, and it is infinite on the diagonal, so the formula gives no number. For a degenerate kernel , the trace is . This is the trace of the matrix with entries , which represents on the span of . The traces of the iterated kernels , , appear in the power series of the Fredholm determinant. A continuous kernel need not define a trace class operator on ; when it does, the number above equals the operator trace.
