Problem
Let be complex numbers with for all . Decide whether there is a positive finite Borel measure on the circle such that The numbers are then the trigonometric moments, or Fourier–Stieltjes coefficients, of .
Remarks
The problem is solved. Such a measure exists if and only if, for every , the Hermitian Toeplitz matrix is positive semidefinite. This is the Carathéodory–Toeplitz theorem, also known in the form of Herglotz's theorem on positive-definite sequences. Necessity is a short computation: for complex numbers , When the measure exists it is unique, because trigonometric polynomials are dense in the continuous functions on ; this contrasts with the Hamburger moment problem. The truncated problem, with only given, is also solvable exactly when is positive semidefinite.
Example: and for give , and is Lebesgue measure . The sequence , , otherwise is not a moment sequence: the matrix is positive semidefinite, but has determinant .
