Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring and let d≥1d \ge 1 be an integer. Let EE be a linear recurrence with constant coefficients of order dd over RR, with coefficients c0,…,cd−1∈Rc_0, \dots, c_{d-1} \in R. Let uu and vv be solutions of EE, that is, sequences ℕ→R\N \to R with un+d=∑i=0d−1ciun+iu_{n+d} = \sum_{i=0}^{d-1} c_i u_{n+i} and vn+d=∑i=0d−1civn+iv_{n+d} = \sum_{i=0}^{d-1} c_i v_{n+i} for all n∈ℕn \in \N. If ui=viu_i = v_i for i=0,1,…,d−1i = 0, 1, \dots, d-1, then un=vnu_n = v_n for all n∈ℕn \in \N.

Remarks

The proof is a strong induction on nn. For n<dn < d the claim is the hypothesis. For n≥dn \ge d, the recurrence writes unu_n and vnv_n by the same formula in the dd previous terms, which agree by induction. Existence also holds: for each choice of u0,…,ud−1u_0, \dots, u_{d-1} in RR, the recurrence defines the later terms one by one. So the map u↦(u0,…,ud−1)u \mapsto (u_0, \dots, u_{d-1}) is a bijection from the solutions onto RdR^d; see the space of solutions. Example: let φ\varphi and ψ\psi be the roots of X2−X−1X^2 - X - 1, and let vn=(φn−ψn)/5v_n = (\varphi^n - \psi^n)/\sqrt{5}. Then vv solves un+2=un+1+unu_{n+2} = u_{n+1} + u_n over ℝ\R, and v0=0v_0 = 0, v1=1v_1 = 1. The Fibonacci sequence solves the same recurrence with the same two initial values, so it equals vv; this proves Binet's formula. Fewer initial values are not enough: (0,1,1,2,3,… )(0, 1, 1, 2, 3, \dots) and (0,2,2,4,6,… )(0, 2, 2, 4, 6, \dots) both solve un+2=un+1+unu_{n+2} = u_{n+1} + u_n and agree in the first term only.

Going deeper

For a student

This fact is the basic tool for proving closed formulas for recurrent sequences. To check a formula, one checks that it satisfies the recurrence and that it has the right first dd terms. Together with existence, it shows that the solutions form a free module of rank dd with the initial values as coordinates. In Mathlib it is LinearRecurrence.eq_mk_of_is_sol_of_eq_init.
