Problem
Let , and let be the Euclidean distance in the Euclidean plane. Let be the largest number of pairs with in a set of points of the plane. Determine the order of growth of as .
Remarks
Paul Erdős posed the problem in 1946. In the same paper he showed , and, using a suitably scaled square grid, for a constant ; here is big O notation. Joel Spencer, Endre Szemerédi and William Trotter proved in 1984. A short proof of this bound by László Székely uses the crossing number inequality. The exact order of growth is still not known. The pairs at distance form the edges of a unit distance graph on the points.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
