Upper and lower Darboux integrals

Builds on Upper and lower Darboux sums

Definition

Let a<ba < b and let f ⁣:[a,b]→ℝf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R} be bounded. The upper Darboux integral of ff is the infimum of the upper Darboux sums U(f,P)U(f, P) over all partitions PP of [a,b][a, b]. The lower Darboux integral of ff is the supremum of the lower Darboux sums L(f,P)L(f, P) over all partitions PP.

Remarks

The lower Darboux integral is at most the upper one. The function is Darboux integrable if the two are equal. By a theorem, this is the same as Riemann integrability. For the Dirichlet function on [0,1][0, 1], the upper integral is 11 and the lower integral is 00.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
